Silverstone 6 Hours 1982
The 1982 Silverstone 6-hour race , also known as Pace 6 Hours, a round of The FIA World Endurance Championship for Manufacturers, Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit , took place on May 16 at the Silverstone Circuit and was the second round of the World Sports Car Championship this year.
The race
A new era in Porsche motorsport history began with the 6-hour race at Silverstone . For the new technical regulations of Group C , the Porsche engineers developed the Porsche 956 under the direction of Norbert Singer . After extensive test drives by Jürgen Barth on the in-house test track in Weissach , the racing car with chassis 001 made its debut in Silverstone.
In practice, the Porsche, driven by Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell , showed its improved aerodynamic properties compared to the competition. In qualification training Jacky Ickx achieved the best lap time of 1: 16.910 minutes. His lead over the second-placed Lancia LC1 of Piercarlo Ghinzani and Teo Fabi was just under a second.
Since only a few Group C cars were developed ready for use at the beginning of the season, transitional rules applied so that cars from Group 5 and 6 and the American IMSA GTX class were still eligible to compete, but they did not receive any points for the world championship. While the Porsche had to drive up to ten seconds per lap slower than was possible in order to comply with the strict consumption and distance rules of Group C, the Group 6 Lancia LC1 could drive without restrictions. As a result, Michele Alboreto and Riccardo Patrese won the race with a lead of three laps on the works Porsche.
