Jerez 800 km race in 1988

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 800 km race of Jerez 1988 , also Jerez 800 Kilometers, Jerez , took place on March 6th at the Circuito de Jerez and was the first race of the sports car world championship of that year.

The race

Both the Swiss Sauber team and the British Jaguar team had carried out extensive test drives on the Circuit de Jerez before the start of the season. Both teams came to the event well prepared and fought the duel for the overall victory expected by the audience. The decision to win the race was made due to a mistake by Andy Wallace in the leading Jaguar, who made a spin while lapping and lost almost a whole lap in the process. At the finish, Wallace and his teammates John Nielsen and John Watson were 24 seconds short of the Sauber of Jean-Louis Schlesser , Mauro Baldi and Jochen Mass .
