Hold the Line is a song by the American rock band Toto that was released as the band's debut single in September 1978.

background

Hold the Line was written by David Paich , the band's keyboardist . He started with the piano riff that can be heard from the beginning of the song. The line "Hold the line, love isn't always on time", which later became the lyrics of the chorus , occurred to him in one night, after which he wrote the song within two hours. The phrase Hold the Line means to maintain or stick with the current state . The lines of the stanzas always begin with the words "It's not ...", with the lyric self explaining what love is not while trying to find out what love is. The song was produced by the band and sung by Bobby Kimball and is included on their first studio album, Toto .
