The crowning glory was the first appearance at a Formula 1 Grand Prix . In Fuji he made his debut at the Japanese Grand Prix in a factory Surtees TS19 . The race, which was marked by the duel for the title between James Hunt and Niki Lauda , Takahara finished in ninth place, three laps behind the winner Mario Andretti in the Lotus 77 .
In 1977, to Hasemi's annoyance, he took over his cockpit at the Kojima plant . He started again at his home Grand Prix in Fuji. During the race he had a collision with Mario Andretti which damaged the car so badly that he had to give up the race.
