Noritake Takahara ( Japanese 高原 敬 武 , Takahara Noritake ; born June 6, 1951 in Tokyo ) is a former Japanese racing car driver .

Career

Takahara began his career in 1969 with a Honda S800 in the Japanese Touring Car Championship. In the early 1970s he drove various makes of March in the Japanese Formula 2 championship. In 1973 he came to Europe and competed for GRD in the European Formula 2 championship.

In 1974 Takahara returned to Japan and entered the Japanese sports car championship. Then in 1976 the climax of the Japanese career. For the third time in a row he was the overall winner in the sports car championship and faced tough competition from Masahiro Hasemi and Kazuyoshi Hoshino , the top drivers in Japan in 1976, he also won the overall standings in the Formula 2 championship. The crowning glory was the first appearance at a Formula 1 Grand Prix . In Fuji he made his debut at the Japanese Grand Prix in a factory Surtees TS19 . The race, which was marked by the duel for the title between James Hunt and Niki Lauda , Takahara finished in ninth place, three laps behind the winner Mario Andretti in the Lotus 77 .

In 1977, to Hasemi's annoyance, he took over his cockpit at the Kojima plant . He started again at his home Grand Prix in Fuji. During the race he had a collision with Mario Andretti which damaged the car so badly that he had to give up the race.

Takahara remained active as a racing driver until the 1980s, with formula racing remaining his priority.
