Aldo Andretti (born February 28, 1940 in Montona , Italy today Motovun , Croatia , † December 30, 2020 in Indianapolis ) was an American racing driver . Mario Andretti is his twin brother.

Career

Alongside the Unsers, the Andrettis are the second large American racing family. In addition to Mario and Aldo, his sons also made careers in motorsport. Aldo was the father of John and Adam Andretti , the uncle of Michael and Jeff Andretti, and the great-uncle of Marco Andretti .

Aldo emigrated to the USA in 1948 with his brother and parents. In 1955 the family settled in Nazareth after spending the first few years in the USA in an immigrant camp. Like his brother, Aldo was fascinated by motorsport as a child. Both began their racing careers in the late 1950s. After initial success with self-built stock cars , they quickly switched to the midget car scene. At that time, both were driving on approximately the same level before Aldo was thrown back by serious accidents. In 1959 he was in a coma for a few days after an accident. In the 1960s, Mario made a career in the major US racing series, such as the USAC series and NASCAR . Aldo competed in races in the IMCA touring car series.

Another serious accident in 1969, in which he suffered 14 broken bones in his face, ended his racing career.

Aldo, who is always welcome in the pit lanes, recently looked after the careers of his sons and his great-nephew. He died at the end of December 2020 at the age of 80.
