Copersucar is a Brazilian cooperative and one of the world's largest producers of sugar and alcohol . The company is based in São Paulo .

The cooperative was founded on July 1, 1959 to improve the production and distribution of sugar and by-products such as ethanol. At that time, Brazilian sugar producers were badly affected by European import restrictions and falling sugar prices, so that cooperation was necessary to overcome the crisis.

Today 85 companies from the Brazilian states of São Paulo , Minas Gerais and Paraná are united in the cooperative. Sales in the 2006/07 financial year amounted to 5 billion reals (around 1.8 billion euros ), half of which was generated by ethanol and sugar production.

On October 18, 2013, there was a major fire in the port of Santos , which destroyed the warehouse infrastructure of Copersucar, including 180,000 t of sugar. The sugar price on the raw material markets rose as a result.
