Race of Champions 1965 (Formula 1)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Daily Mail Race of Champions held on March 13, 1965 at the British Brands Hatch Circuit was an automobile race that was held according to the Formula 1 regulations , but which, as a so-called non-championship race, was not part of the Formula 1 World Championship . It was the first of a total of 14 races that were held under this name until 1983 . The first overall winner of the Race of Champions was British racing driver Mike Spence , who competed for Team Lotus .

report

Brands Hatch Circuit

In its first year, the Race of Champions was supported by the Daily Mail magazine , which became namesake.

Messages and qualifying

All works teams participating in the Formula 1 World Championship registered for the race in March 1965. Then there were the established customer teams Rob Walker Racing , Reg Parnell Racing and Scuderia Centro Sud . Together they made up more than half of the starting field. There were also a number of smaller customer teams and private drivers, some of whom were using outdated chassis and low-performance engines.

22 drivers were admitted. There were also Rodney Bloor , Paul Hawkins and John Rhodes , who were registered as reserve drivers.

Jim Clark , the Formula 1 world champion of 1963 , who drove for the Lotus works team , dominated the qualification training . He reached pole position with half a second ahead of Graham Hill in the factory BRM , the vice world champion of the 1964 Formula 1 season .

run

The Race of Champions was carried out in two separate runs of 40 laps each. For the overall ranking, the times of the two runs were added.

The private drivers Ludovico Scarfiotti and Jo Schlesser were disqualified in the first run for using outside help; they were not allowed to take part in the second run. Due to technical problems with his car, Masten Gregory also decided not to take part in the second run. In their place drove the reserve drivers Rodney Bloor , Paul Hawkins and John Rhodes , who had not participated in the first run.

Jim Clark won the first run with a 20 second lead over the American Dan Gurney, who competed in the Brabham factory . Third was Clark's team mate Mike Spence .

Winner car: Lotus 33

In the second run Jim Clark, whose renewed victory was expected, retired after a collision with Gurney. Gurney was initially able to continue, but then suffered an engine failure and had to retire before the end of the race. The second run was won by Lotus works driver Mike Spence, who after adding up his times from both runs was classified as the overall winner. The Race of Champions was the only Formula 1 race that Spence could win in 1965. At the World Championship runs of 1965, sixth place at the Mexican Grand Prix was his best result.
