Lola T93 / 30
The Lola T93 / 30 was a Formula 1 race car, which the BMS Scuderia Italia 1993 in the -formula 1 began World Championship.
Development history and technology
Since Scuderia Italia's entry into the Formula 1 World Championship in 1988 , the team had had its racing cars designed by the Italian manufacturer Dallara . The cooperation ended at the end of the 1992 season. Instead, the team commissioned the British racing car manufacturer Lola Cars to develop a new racing car. As in the previous year, the 3.5-liter engine came from Ferrari (Tipo 040).
The T93 / 30 was developed under the direction of Eric Broadley at Lola in Huntingdon , where not only the chassis but also the transmission was made. The T93 / 30 was a very conventional Formula 1 car. For cost reasons and, above all, due to a lack of technology access, Broadley did without traction control and active wheel suspension , which were common in other vehicles this year. The Lola struggled with weight problems at the beginning of the season and was difficult to adjust. The two works drivers Michele Alboreto and Luca Badoer complained about the poor handling of the car throughout the year.
The T93 / 30 was the slowest racing car of the season and was voted the fifth worst Formula 1 racing car in motorsport history in a 2009 survey by the British car magazine Autosport.
Racing history
The Lola T93 / 30 made its racing debut at the Grand Prix of South Africa on the Kyalami circuit . In qualifying training, Michele Alboreto and Luca Badoer only achieved 25th and 26th starting positions and criticized the car's poor driving behavior; on the 24 placed Minardi M193 by Fabrizio Barbazza , Alboreto was almost a second missing. With a time of 1.21.893 minutes, he was 6.1 seconds slower than the fastest in training Alain Prost in the Williams FW15C . Badoer was three seconds slower. Both T93 / 30s retired in the race. Badoer had a gearbox damage after driving 20 laps and Alboreto had to park his vehicle after 55 laps because the Ferrari engine was completely overheated.
Before the second race of the season, the Brazilian Grand Prix , there was a precarious change in the regulations for the Scuderia. From this race on, only the 24th fastest vehicles from the training sessions for the respective races should be allowed to start. This could have had fatal consequences for the slow Lola T93 / 30. In the end, the FIA agreed on 25 starters so that at least one car from each team could take part in the races. Amazingly, both Lola qualified for the race in Interlagos . The first non-qualifier for this new rule was Ivan Capelli in the Jordan 193 . Both vehicles reached the destination. Alboreto finished eleventh; Badoer was twelfth.
The third race of the season was the European Grand Prix at Donington Park . While Luca Badoer was affected by a non-qualification for the first time, Michele Alboreto finished the race again in eleventh place; however, at the finish he was six laps behind the winner Ayrton Senna , who drove a McLaren MP4 / 8 . After the first three races it was clear that the Lola T93 / 30 was the slowest vehicle in the field and under normal racing conditions it seemed impossible to achieve a placement among the top six classified vehicles and thus to score world championship points.
Including the San Marino Grand Prix , Michele Alboreto missed qualifying five times out of six attempts to qualify. During this phase Badoer achieved his best result of the season with seventh place in Imola .
The Scuderia-Italia-Lola had the smallest gap to the top at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza . Ferrari had equipped the 040 engines with pneumatic valves, which had a positive effect on the response behavior of the engines. Badoer finished the race two laps behind the winner Damon Hill in tenth place.
The T93 / 30 last raced in September 1993 at the Portuguese Grand Prix . At this point, Giuseppe Lucchini , the owner of Scuderia Italia, had announced the merger of his team with Minardi from the 1993 Formula 1 season and did not take part in the last two world championship races of the year.
