Ascota was a brand for mechanical calculating machines from the VEB booking machine works Karl-Marx-Stadt (formerly Astrawerke AG) in Chemnitz, Saxony . It was introduced in 1959 because the company founder John E. Greve, who was expropriated after the end of the war and now living in West Germany, successfully claimed the rights to the original “Astra” brand. The made-up word Ascota arose from the combination of “ As tra” and “ Co ntinen ta l”, the office machine brand of Wanderer-Werke, also from Chemnitz .

Under the name Ascota, the Chemnitz plant produced various calculating and booking machines , including the class 170 booking machine, which was manufactured over 300,000 times in various versions up to 1983 and exported to over 100 countries.

After the booking machine factory was integrated into the Robotron combine , the name Ascota was increasingly replaced by the robotron brand .
