Two Polish free royal elections took place on the historic, now defunct electoral field in Kamion . The field was on the right bank of the Vistula in what is now Warsaw 's Praga-Południe district .

history

For the first time in 1573 a Polish king was elected by the nobility . Since there was no way in Warsaw to hold a gathering with such a large number of voters, the fields of the village of Kamion eastward (on the right bank of the river) were designated as a voting site. This settlement on the bank of the Vistula near the ford from Solec to Saska Kępa has existed since the 11th or 12th century .

In 1573 there were several candidates for election, including two favored: the Habsburg Archduke Ernst of Austria and the French Prince Heinrich von Valois . The French won the election, but only held office for a year. After his removal, the Hungarian Stefan Bathory was elected King of Poland in 1576 . This election took place in the future more important electoral field in Wielki Wola . It was not until 1733, there was another (and last time) using the selection field in Kamion, as the Saxon Elector Friedrich August II. (Known in Poland as Augustus III.) Against the candidate Sweden and France, Stanislaw Leszczynski could decide the election itself .

In 1780 King Stanisław August Poniatowski bought the lands of the existing church and parish of Kamion from the episcopal chapter in Płock , only to hand it over to his nephew Stanisław the following year, who later also took over the Jurydyka (with 59 properties).

The former is now a Kamion under the name of settlement Kamionek provided with residential development part of the Warsaw district of Praga-Południe which to Praga belongs. Around the site of the former polling place is the Skaryszew Park with Lake Kamion (Polish Jezioro Kamionkowskie ) and the Ostbahnhof (Polish Stacja Wschodnia ).
