Captain MacWhirr and his crew sail the Chinese Sea on the steamer Nan-Shan, on behalf of an English shipping company , but under the flag of Siam . On one voyage, the ship gets caught in a typhoon and the sailors struggle to survive. The situation is complicated by the fact that the Nan-Shan, a group of Chinese coolies has on board, in the dark and stormy steerage fighting for their savings silver dollars falling from the shattering chests. MacWhirr and his people manage to restore order and bring the Nan-Shan, albeit badly marked, into port.
