Dollar General is an American department store chain headquartered in Goodlettsville , Tennessee . At the beginning of 2020, the company employed around 143,000 people in 16,278 stores. The company was founded in 1939 by Cal Turner in Scottsville , Kentucky .
On March 12, 2007, Dollar General was acquired by the investment company William Kravis Watson and floated on the stock exchange in 2009.
