Esteban Manuel Gutiérrez Gutiérrez (born August 5, 1991 in Monterrey , Nuevo León ) is a Mexican racing driver . In 2010 he won the championship title of the GP3 series . He started in the GP2 series in 2011 and 2012 . He drove in Formula 1 from 2013 to 2016 .

Career

After Gutiérrez began his motorsport career in karting in 2004 , he switched to formula racing in 2007 and took part in the American Formula BMW . With four wins he won the runner-up title behind Daniel Morad and was the best newcomer. He also took part in two German Formula BMW races. In 2008 he moved to Europe in the European Formula BMW, which arose from the merger of the British and German Formula BMWs. With seven victories, he won the championship title of this formula ahead of Marco Wittmann , making him the youngest Mexican racing driver of all time to win an international title. He also competed in two races in the German Formula 3 Cup and the International Formula Masters . At the world finals of Formula BMW he finished third behind the winner Alexander Rossi and Michael Christensen .

In 2009 Gutiérrez started as a teammate of Jules Bianchi , Valtteri Bottas and Adrien Tambay for ART Grand Prix in the Formula 3 Euro Series . With two third places, he finished ninth at the end of the season. He also made four guest starts in the British Formula 3 championship . The highlight of the year was a Formula 1 test day for the BMW Sauber team, which Gutiérrez was allowed to contest in December 2009. In 2010 Gutiérrez competed in the newly founded GP3 series for ART Grand Prix . With five wins he secured the first championship title of the GP3 series ahead of Robert Wickens . He also made guest starts for ART in the Formula 3 Euro Series and in the British Formula 3 Championship. In addition, on several Grand Prix weekends with the Sauber team, he got an insight into the processes of a Formula 1 weekend and completed a test day for the Formula 1 racing team.

In 2011 Gutiérrez switched to the GP2 series and stayed with his team, which started under the name Lotus ART Grand Prix this season. He started both in the season of the GP2 Asia series and in the regular season . In the GP2 Asia series he was eleventh in the drivers' championship. In the GP2 series, he scored his first victory in the sprint race in Valencia . While his team mate Bianchi finished third, Gutiérrez finished the season in 13th place overall. After the season Gutiérrez took part in the 2011 GP2 Final for Lotus ART and finished eighth. In addition, he took on the role of test and substitute driver in Formula 1 at Sauber Motorsport, where he completed two test days. However, when regular Sauber driver Sergio Pérez was out for a weekend, Pedro de la Rosa was preferred to him. In 2012 Gutiérrez completed his second GP2 season. His team competed as the Lotus GP this season . He won the main races in Valencia and Silverstone as well as the sprint race on the Hungaroring . He finished third in the drivers' standings, and within the team he beat James Calado with 176 to 160 points. Gutiérrez also remained a test driver at Sauber.

Esteban Gutiérrez in the Sauber (2013)

For the Formula 1 World Championship 2013 Gutiérrez finally received a cockpit with Sauber in Formula 1. In his debut race in Australia , he achieved 13th place. In Spain , Gutiérrez was briefly in the lead due to strategic reasons. In the final phase he drove the fastest race lap. In eleventh place, however, he missed the points. At the Japanese Grand Prix , Gutiérrez scored seventh for the only time in the season. With 6 to 51 points he was defeated by Nico Hülkenberg within the team and was 16th in the drivers' standings. In 2014 Gutiérrez completed his second Formula 1 World Championship for Sauber. When the permanent Formula 1 start numbers were introduced, he chose # 21 for his further career. Gutiérrez remained - like his teammate Adrian Sutil - without points. Twelfth place at the season opener in Australia was his best result. At the end of the season he finished 20th overall. Gutiérrez left Sauber after two years. In 2015 he was a test and reserve driver at Scuderia Ferrari .

In 2016 Gutiérrez was a regular driver at the Haas racing team, which had just entered Formula 1 . Although he internally prevailed 10 to 9 against his teammate Romain Grosjean after placing in qualifying , he clearly defeated him on points with 0 to 29 points. He finished the season in 21st place in the world championship.

In 2017 he competed in the FIA Formula E Championship . Furthermore, he came to some assignments in the IndyCar Series . He represented at Dale Coyne Racing Sébastien Bourdais , who had injured himself in qualifying for the Indianapolis 500 and failed for several races.

He has been involved in the simulator program for the Mercedes AMG F1 Team since 2018 . Since 2019 he has also been a development driver for the Formula 1 team and test driver for the Formula E team .

Others

After the 2016 Mexican Grand Prix, he married his girlfriend Mónica Casán.
