Joey DeGrandis (born March 11, 1969 in Boston ) is a retired American boxer and IBF and WBO candidate.

Life

DeGrandis was born on March 11, 1969 in Boston. He started boxing at an early age. After he married his first wife, he moved to Chicago ( Illinois ).

Career

In super middleweight

DeGrandis made his professional debut in the super middleweight division on June 26, 1990 against Jason Burrell, who lost each of his eleven professional fights, but fought against later world champions such as Antonio Tarver and Richard Steward. He defeated this unanimously on points.

After defeating more nameless opponents, he fought against Charles Brewer, who was defending his IBF title. He lost this unanimously after twelve rounds, as he had little to oppose Brewer's robust fighting style.

Change to light heavyweight

A little later DeGrandis switched to light heavyweight, where he was allowed to challenge the reigning linear and WBO, as well as former IBF and WBA world champion, Dariusz Michalczewski, after several nameless fights . The Pole was and is still considered the best light heavyweight fighter alongside Roy Jones junior and was unbeaten in 45 professional fights.

The fight took place on April 20, 2002 in Gdansk , Poland . DeGrandis couldn't counter Michalczewski's style of fighting and was already severely knocked out in the first minute of the second round. Then he was able to defeat Dan Sheehan unanimously and lost to Ernest Mathem. After this fight, he challenged former WBA and IBF world champion Virgil Hill , who lost his title in 1997 to Dariusz Michalczewski. Against this he hardly performed at all, which is why he lost the fight unanimously.

After losing to WBA World Champion Fabrice Tiozzo , he announced his resignation.
