8-anilinonaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid, crystals microscopically in transmitted light and fluorescence in black light

8-anilinonaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid (ANS) is a chemical compound from the group of sulfonic acids . ANS is used for fluorescent labeling of proteins . The light intensity increases when ANS binds to a hydrophobic region of a protein. ANS is used to stain the membranes of mitochondria . When proteins are denatured with chaotropes , the number of bound ANS molecules increases with unfolding .
