Jørgen Jensen (prehistoric)

Jørgen Jensen (born July 30, 1936 in Aarhus ; † March 2, 2008 ) was a Danish historian and archaeologist who was awarded the Søren Gyldendal Prize in 1992 .

Life

After attending school, Jensen studied Nordic archeology and European prehistory and early history at the University of Copenhagen and graduated with a master's degree in 1965 , where he was awarded the university's gold medal for a paper in 1962.

In addition to his subsequent research, he was an employee of the Danish National Museum and responsible for numerous exhibitions, especially during the Bronze Age . He made his literary debut in 1978 with bronze alders from the Sesams Danmarkshistorie series . Between 1979 and 1983 and 1986 to 1990 he was a permanent panelist at Hvad er det? , a popular archeology television show on Danmarks Radio , and wrote Politikens og Gyldendals Danmarkshistory in 1988 . Jensen, who temporarily worked at the University of California, Berkeley and the Humanist Research Center at the University of Copenhagen, became a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences in 1989 and received the Søren Gyldendal Prize in 1992 for his specialist literary work. In 1998 he was the author of the tenth volume and the supplementary volume of Den Store Danske Encyklopædi , published between 1994 and 2002 . In 1999 he earned a doctorate in philosophy with a dissertation entitled Manden i Kisten. Hvad bronzealderens gravhøje wrote and wrote his main work between 2001 and 2004, the four-volume presentation Danmarks oldtid with the individual volumes Stenalder (2001), Bronzealder (2002), Ældre Jernalder (2003) and Yngre Jernalder og Vikingetid (2004). For this presentation he received the Weekendavisens litteraturpris in 2004 and the Amalienborg prizes and the HO Lange prizes in 2005.
