The Old Cemetery Minden is a listed cemetery in the East Westphalian city of Minden . It is located in the Königsglacis west of the city center in front of the old fortress walls and thus outside the old fortress city.

history

The old cemetery Minden was founded in 1808 by the Minden parish of St. Martini . The Prussian government had passed a law, the so-called Prussian land law, according to which there are no more funerals within the city.

The parish of St. Martini submitted an application to the city council for a parish-owned cemetery in front of the fortress walls, which was granted in 1808. The area in front of the King's Gate was assigned to the community. It is the only cemetery that has remained in front of the fortress walls to this day.

When the fortress was razed in 1873, the old cemetery was expanded to include the then abandoned fortress and the cemetery was redesigned. A four-field system typical of the 19th century with axles and a central square was created.

At first only parishioners were buried in the cemetery, later when the cemetery passed into the ownership of the city of Minden, all residents of the city of Minden could be buried here. There were also two denominational burial sites, the Jews and the Quaker cemetery .

In 1904 the cemetery was supplemented by the north cemetery and later by the south cemetery as a burial place and later replaced.

The old cemetery has been a listed building since 1998.

Memorial stones

In the old cemetery there are several memorial stones that are not always completely preserved. There is a large boulder, which was consecrated on May 19, 1968 as the memorial of the 94th Infantry Division and commemorates the dead of the Second World War .

There is also a building of the infantry regiment “Prince Friedrich of the Netherlands” (2nd Westphalian) No. 15 used as a morgue ; the panels of favor commemorate the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 .

Botanical Garden

The old cemetery was laid out in the 1950s as a botanical garden and teaching garden for the city of Minden. The redesign of the listed site took place after the cemetery was abandoned as the main burial site for the city of Minden in 1951. However, the first plans were already made in 1920 when the first steps towards the park were taken. In addition, a botanical nature trail and a rock garden, as well as a rose garden and a water garden were created.
