Karl Anton Josef "Tony" Avenarius also Toni Avenarius (pseudonym: Antonius Hafermann ; born April 17, 1836 in Bonn , † January 31, 1901 in Cologne ) was a German book illustrator , graphic artist , draftsman , composer and librettist .

Life

Tony Avenarius, the son of Oberbergrats Otto Avenarius and his wife Amalia, née Flocken, studied at the Munich Art Academy from 1853 and worked in the studios of Gisbert Flüggen and Erich Corres . In 1861 he moved to Cologne, where he became the owner of a lithographic workshop.

In 1869, Tony Avenarius was the first artist to succeed in joining the 400 to 450 mosaic parts, part of the floor in the crypt of St. Gereon , and the architect Heinrich Wiethase brought in this mosaic to match the room. He is also to be thanked for the discovery and preservation of the Romanesque ceiling painting.

In 1880 Tony Avenarius was, alongside Adolf Wallraf, one of only two artists who created templates for a series of lithographs to document the historical parade leading to the completion of the cathedral . Avenarius' work was generally regarded as the more artistically valuable.

Tony Avenarius was temporarily vice-president of the Cologne men's singing association and a member of the amateur play group Cäcilia Wolkenburg , for which he wrote numerous texts under his pseudonym.
