Wilhelm Scheben (born April 29, 1812 in Cologne ; † April 14, 1895 ibid) was a Cologne brewer , chronicler , historian , merchant and from 1873 to 1895 for the German Center Party Prussian state parliament member for the cities of Cochem and Mayen as well as Praeses of St. Peter of Milan Brotherhood .

Life

As the son of a brandy distiller, Wilhelm Scheben went to school at a Catholic high school in Cologne in order to later work in the brewing trade like his two brothers. One of his brothers was Johann Heinrich Scheben († 1865), the father of Hubert Anton Scheben , who went down in town history as "Schebens Tünn".

In 1842 Wilhelm Scheben and his fiancée, who was married in 1843, acquired the brewery and inn "Alt Rom" <up ruim> at the Würfelpforte ( Unter Sachsenhausen 38) from the brewer Theodor Billstein , which takes its name from the 12th century city gate "Wurfpfeilspforte" derives. to become a member of the Cologne Brewing Brotherhood in 1843 . His son-in-law was Titus Bredt Jr.

His chairmanship from 1849 in the Kölner Brauer Corporation, previously the Cologne Brewing Brotherhood, was followed in 1865 by the duties of Prefect and Treasurer. In 1869 the Scheben couple renewed the foundation, which had expired during the French occupation, to hold an annual patronage fair for the brewing brotherhood .

After lengthy negotiations, Scheben sold the brewery with the tower system in 1872 for 1,400 thalers to the city of Cologne, which put it down in the same year.

His 50-year membership in the St. Peter of Milan Brotherhood was commemorated in 1893 in the Isabellen-Saal des Gürzenichs with the certificate designed by the painter and composer Tony Avenarius .

He was an advocate of the Purity Law of 1412 and at the meeting at the beginning of November 1885 in front of 320 Rhenish and Westphalian brewers in the "Fränkischer Hof" in Cologne, he resisted using surrogates of all kinds for brewing.

Wilhelm Scheben died in 1895 a few days before his 83rd birthday. His grave is in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne .

In his private will of March 12, 1891, he left the public with the painting made by Soentgen of the brewer banner master Christian Lommeder, who was the father of Barbara and Sybilla Lommeder and was born at Ursulastraße 5/7. Furthermore, it was his last will to give the St. Peter of Milan Brotherhood the three pigskin tomes from 1743 that he was in his position as Rendant with him.
