Pavlos Fyssas, 2011

Pavlos Fyssas ( Greek Παύλος Φύσσας ; * April 10, 1979 ; † September 18, 2013 , Keratsini ) was a Greek hip-hop musician and anti-fascist activist. He was under the stage name Killah P. known. Fyssas has been active in the Greek hip-hop scene since 1997 and is said to have belonged to the radical left party ANTARSYA . He was stabbed to death by Giorgos Roupakias, a member of the neo-Nazi party Chrysi Avgi .

Consequences of the murder

The act caused outrage across the country. In several Greek cities there were demonstrations against fascism and riots with injuries and major property damage. In Athens alone 50,000 people gathered. Fyssas was buried in the Schisto cemetery (Νεκροταφείο Σχιστού) by Keratsini. Many visitors used the funeral procession to spontaneously protest against right-wing extremism.

In a televised address , the Greek Prime Minister Samaras called for calm and resistance to extremism. Parliament led a heated debate on the constitutional conformity of individual parties. The Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland condemned the murder and warned of an "extremely dangerous development" in Europe. The Chrysi Avgi denies any involvement in the act and condemned the murder. Police raided party offices and homes across the country and seized evidence. The Greek government withdrew the personal protection of the members of the Chrysi Avgi, because no “criminal organization” should be guarded any more. Party leader Nikolaos Michaloliakos and other senior members and MPs were arrested ten days after the crime for forming a criminal organization.

On the evening of November 1, 2013, an unknown perpetrator shot dead two members of the Chrysi Avgi party in front of a party office in Neo Iraklio , a suburb of Athens, and seriously injured another person. A fourth person was able to escape into the building. The security authorities link the attack to the death of Pavlos Fyssas. Political observers feared a further radicalization of the political dispute.

The street in Keratsini where Pavlos Fyssas was murdered was named in November 2015. A memorial was also erected at the site of the murder.
