geography

The Euche rises immediately northeast of the center of Bourg-des-Maisons at about 140 meters above sea level in a dry valley that forks up the valley . It also has a branch to the northwest of the town center, which continues to the south as a dry valley.

The Euche initially flows north, but then turns in an east-southeast direction at Feraillou , which it maintains as far as Saint-Just. At Feraillou , its valley widens to 500 meters, and a dry valley opens here to the west, which dendritically drains the hills to the community of Vertriebslac and Coutures to the Euche. A little south of Saint-Just , the Euche takes on the Julie (or Ruisseau de Buffebale ) coming from the northwest as a left branch . It then swings on a south-easterly course and meets the Sandonie at Le Moulin de l'Étang , another left branch with a generally southern flow direction. Behind Saint-Vivien (near La Maine d'Euche ) the river goes south-south-east and finally south. The right-hand confluence with the Dronne takes place after 12.2 kilometers at 85 meters above sea level at Moulin de Rochereuil - a triple point where the municipalities of Creyssac, Grand-Brassac and Bourdeilles meet.

Apart from six small, predominantly northeast- trending dry valleys (near Lapouze , Chapdeuil , Fongravière , Le Roc , Château de Marouatte and Le Maine d'Euche ), the Euche has no significant right branches. Two other arid valleys act as left branches (at Francoiseau and Saint-Vivien ).

geology

Sub-Portland micrite from Chapdeuil

The euche has its source in the shallow sediments of the northern Aquitaine Basin , more precisely in fossil limestone of the Coniacium . The upper chalk layers here form part of the south wing of the east-south-east trending La Tour Blanche anticline , which is designed as a topographical ridge. The flow then cut successively deeper formations a ( Rudistenkalke of Angoumiens north of the center of Bourg-des-Maisons, bulbous Kreidekalke of Ligériens to Feraillou and sand , sandstones and marl of Cenomaniums from Francoiseau ). The cenomanium accompanies the river on its right side of the valley to just before Saint-Just. To the north of Lapouze , the euche meets the predominantly micritic Malm limestone of the Portlandium on its left side of the valley . After leaving the core area of the tectonically determined bulge , the euche now goes through the layer package in reverse order (Cenomanium from Le Moulin-Haut , Ligérien from Saint-Just and Angoumien in calcarenitic Paussac facies from Le Roc to Le Maine d'Euche ), and finally to flow into the drone in the coniacium.

The floodplains are filled with recent alluvial soil (sandy clays and sands). Between Feraillou and Lapouze also has peat formed.

The river is crossed by two northeast trending faults which follow the course of the dry valleys at Fongravière and at Le Roc . The existence of arid valleys suggests a rather intensive karstification of the catchment area. This fact is further emphasized by the presence of numerous springs or layer springs along the course of the river.

There are large quarries at Bourg-des-Maisons (in Angoumien) and at Le Maine d'Euche (Angoumien and Coniacium).

Hydrology

The Euche has a catchment area of 87 square kilometers. Their average gradient is 4.51 m / km.

history

Prehistoric finds have been made in several places along the Euchetal. In the Thomasson quarry near Le Maine d'Euche , stone tools from the Upper Acheuléen or Moustérien were discovered in addition to remains of mammoths ( Mammuthus primigenius ) . It is very likely that it was a so-called kill site . The site of Le Roc also yielded bison remains, Moustérien à denticulés . The cave of Rochereuil finally contained rich Upper Magdalenian and arrowheads of Aziliens .

The oldest preserved building on the river is the Romanesque local church of Bourg-des Maisons from the eleventh century . The churches of Saint-Just and Saint-Vivien date from the twelfth century .
