Iwan Fedorowytsch Karabyz, English transcription of Ivan Karabyts, also Ivan Karabits (born January 17, 1945 in Yalta , Donetsk Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ; † January 20, 2002 in Kiev ) was a Ukrainian composer and conductor of Greek descent .

Life

Ivan Karabyz was born in the village of Yalta near Velyka Novosilka in the west of Donetsk Oblast to a working-class family and enrolled in the Artemivsk music school at the age of 13 without any initial training . He began to compose at school and after finishing school he switched to Borys Lyatoschynskyj and Myroslaw Skoryk at the Kiev Conservatory , where he taught himself from 1983. Since 1994 he has been the artistic director of the soloist ensemble “Kiew Camerata”. Iwan Karabyz composed for ballet, musical, opera, orchestral and chamber music as well as film music.

He is the father of Kirill Karabits , who also became a conductor. Karabyz died at the age of 57 in Kiev and was buried there in the Baikowe cemetery .
