Ján Cikker (born July 29, 1911 in Banská Bystrica , † December 21, 1989 in Bratislava ) was a Slovak composer.

Life

Cikker studied in Prague with Jaroslav Křička and Vítězslav Novák and in Vienna with Felix von Weingartner . From 1939 to 1949 he taught theory and composition at the Conservatory and since 1951 composition at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava . In 1978 he became a corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the German Democratic Republic .

He composed several operas and ballets , a symphony , symphonic poems and other orchestral pieces, chamber music works, piano pieces, songs and folk song arrangements .

After his death, his widow Katarína Cikkerova founded the Ján Cikker Foundation , which in 2004 set up the Ján Cikker Museum in the composer's former home in Bratislava, a building designed by architects Eugen Kramár and Štefan Lukacovic .
