Vítězslav Novák
Vítězslav Augustín Rudolf Novák (born December 5, 1870 in Kamenice nad Lipou , Bohemia , Austria-Hungary ; † July 18, 1949 in Skuteč , Czechoslovakia ) was a Czech composer and music teacher.
Live and act
The son of a doctor studied law at the Czech Charles University in Prague and at the same time took musical training at the Prague Conservatory from 1891 to 1896 as a student of Josef Jiránek , Karel Stecker and Antonín Dvořák , where he became professor of composition from 1909 to 1939 and was from 1920 to 1922 and 1927/1928 its rector.
His compositional work was influenced by Czech folk music at the beginning and in the 1930s , while in the 1920s he dealt intensively with Western European music. As a composer he achieved international renown and as a pedagogue had a lasting effect on the coming generations of Prague musicians. Stefanija Turkewytsch studied with him. Novák composed several symphonic poems , a suite , serenades , overtures , four operas , two ballets, choral cantatas, chamber music works, piano pieces and songs .
In 1928 he received an honorary doctorate from the Comenius University in Bratislava , was a corresponding member of the Czech Academy of Sciences since 1905 and a full member since 1922, and in 1945 he was awarded the title of National Artist of Czechoslovakia . In 1947 Novák was elected honorary member of the International Society for Contemporary Music ISCM .
With Vítězslav Novák there are occasional mix-ups with the Croatian writer and music teacher Vjenceslav Novak .
