Josef Jiránek
Josef Jiránek (born March 24, 1855 in Ledce / Okres Mladá Boleslav , † January 9, 1940 in Brno ) was a Czech pianist, composer and music teacher.
Jiránek was tutored first by his father and then by Bedřich Smetana . 1872–73 he attended the organ school in Prague. From 1876 to 1877 he taught singing at a high school in Prague. From 1877 he taught singing, piano, harp and music theory in Kharkov. From 1891 to 1923 he was professor of piano at the Prague Conservatory . He taught here among others Erwin Schulhoff and was teacher of Josef Faměra , Rudolf Friml and Vítězslav Novák . He has performed as a pianist since he was twelve and gave concerts in Czechoslovakia, Germany, Austria and Russia. In addition to music-pedagogical works, Jiránek composed mainly piano pieces and chamber music.
