Rudolf Friml (also Charles Rudolf Friml ) (born December 2, 1879 in Prague , † November 12, 1972 in Los Angeles ) was an American pianist and composer of Bohemian-Jewish origin.

He began to compose his first compositions while studying at the Prague Conservatory under Antonín Dvořák . After completing his studies, he became the accompanist of the violinist Jan Kubelík for five years , with whom, in addition to concert tours through Austria, England and Russia, he also undertook two tours through the USA. After the second trip he stayed in the USA in 1906 to compose. Its first public performance was in 1904 the Piano Concerto in B major , which was performed by the New York Philharmonic under Walter Damrosch . His first Broadway hit was the musical The Firefly (filmed as Tarantella ) in 1912.

In the USA, Friml wrote piano concerts, film scores for Hollywood , piano pieces and many operettas , such as the famous Rose Marie (1924) and The Vagabond King (1925). From 1928 he lived in Hollywood. His better-known compositions include Indian Love Call (1924) and The Donkey Serenade (1937). The Indian Love Call as interpreted by Slim Whitman plays an important role in Tim Burton's film Mars Attacks! .
