Escatrón is a Spanish municipality in the province of Saragossa in the autonomous region of Aragon . It is located in the comarca of Ribera Baja del Ebro on the right bank of the Ebro at the confluence of the Río Martín . The place had 1051 inhabitants on January 1, 2019.
history
The place originally called Scatro was recaptured from the Moors by King Alfonso el Batallador in 1133 .
During the civil war , the area was initially in the Republican- controlled part of Spain. There was a field airfield here, which was also used by Red Army fighters . In the course of the Aragon offensive , the area fell to the National Spaniards. In the further course of the offensive, Escatrón initially served as a base for Heinkel He 45 reconnaissance aircraft and later Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighter aircraft of the German Condor Legion , later during the Battle of the Ebro the Italian Aviazione Legionaria used the space.
economy
Unlike in most Aragonese municipalities of this size, the economy is not mainly based on agriculture, but is supported by the thermal power station (Central Termoeléctrica del Ebro Escatrón-Los Fayos of E. On España), which until 2011 was based on lignite (deposits of Andorra (Teruel) and Mequinenza ) generated electricity before being replaced by a newly built combined cycle power plant .
