The Rueda Monastery (Real Monasterio de Nuestra Señora de Rueda) is a former Cistercian abbey in the municipality of Sástago in the Spanish province of Saragossa in the autonomous region of Aragon , 74 km southeast of Saragossa on the left bank of the Ebro .

history

The monastery was built in 1202 after larger land foundations by the Aragonese royal family had preceded it as early as 1162 (including 1175 and 1182 at and in Escatrón) as a subsidiary of the Gimont monastery in France from the filiation of the Morimond primary abbey , after attempts to establish it from 1152 initially in Nuestra Señora de Salt on the Rio Gállego north of Saragossa and in 1167 in Nuestra Señora de la Junceria in Villanueva de Gallego. The first church was consecrated before 1238, the construction of the enclosure followed in the 13th century. The monastery carried out extensive hydraulic works on the Ebro, including a large, now restored water wheel ("rota", "rueda") with a diameter of 16 m , which belongs to a pumping station ( noría ). In the monastery suspension ( disentailment ) under the government of Juan Álvarez Mendizábal , the monastery was probably disbanded 1837th The plant was then used for agricultural purposes. In 1990 the agriculturally used part was acquired by the Aragón region, in 1998 the Spanish state left the church and enclosure to the region against the requirement to restore the complex. The extensive restoration was completed in 2003. Today a hotel (Hospedería de Aragón) is housed in the connecting wing between the enclosure and the abbot's house and in the abbot's house.

Buildings and plant

The church is a typical three-aisled Cistercian church without a transept and with three apses closed at right angles . A wheel (rueda) is shown in the round stucco lattice windows. The Gothic ribbed vault is from a later period, as is the Mudejar- style tower . The cloister adjoins the church to the south, the Gothic cloister with an octagonal well chapel, the east wing with the nine-year chapter house, the small parlatorium , a detention center and the six-bay monks' hall, the south wing with a warm room, refectory and kitchen and the largely renovated one have been preserved Dormitory on the upper floor of the east wing and the somewhat separated attic (cilla). In the Renaissance period , a Herrera-style arcade was built that connects the monastery with the abbot's house. The Royal Gate (Puerta Real) was built in the 18th century.

The oldest part of the cloister , the east gallery, dates from the 13th century, the other galleries from the 14th and 15th centuries.

An alabaster altar has found its way into the parish church of Escatrón .
