Parlatorium

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The parlatorium ( medium lat. Parabolare , "to speak"), also called consulting room , is the area of a monastery in which the nuns or monks receive visitors. Mostly there are several rooms of different sizes.

In orders whose nuns are obliged to adhere to the papal cloister , part of the consulting room can be partitioned off by a cloister grid or, in addition to the grid, from the inside by wooden shutters. The nuns remain in the cloister, while the part of the room in front of the bars belongs to the area of the monastery gate, which is used to receive guests and does not belong to the cloister.

Based on the original meaning, the term is also used for speaking rooms in other facilities, in which there is usually quiet, e.g. B. in libraries.
