Laimdota Straujuma (born February 24, 1951 ) is a Latvian economist and former politician (member of Vienotība since January 2014). From January 22, 2014 to February 11, 2016, she was Prime Minister of Latvia - the first woman to head her country's government.

Life

education

Laimdota Straujuma studied mathematics and physics at the University of Latvia in Riga from 1968 to 1973 . From 1973 to 1988 she was a research assistant at the Institute of Economics of the Latvian Academy of Sciences and completed a postgraduate course, which she completed in 1987 with an apprenticeship . From 1988 to 1991 she worked in the State Planning Authority. In 1992, she was with a dissertation on The evaluation of resources exploitation of Latvian manufacturing companies to Dr. oec. PhD.

Activity in the civil service

From 1993 to 1999 she was deputy head of the state advice center for farm management in agriculture, then head of the state advice center for farm management and advanced training in agriculture. From 1999 to 2006 she was State Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture (until 2000, in the rank of Deputy State Secretary). As State Secretary, before Latvia joined the EU, she was responsible for negotiating the agricultural chapters of the acquis communautaire . From 2007 to 2010 she was State Secretary in the Ministry for Regional Development and Local Government. During her term of office, she implemented an administrative reform in which the small communities (pagasti) were merged into municipal districts (novadi).

From 2011 to 2014, Straujuma was Minister of Agriculture in the cabinet of Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis . After his resignation in connection with the collapse of a supermarket in the capital Riga , President Andris Bērziņš instructed them on January 5, 2014 to form a new government.

On January 22nd, Straujuma and her cabinet were sworn in. After the parliamentary election on October 4, 2014 , in which her party became the second strongest, she was again commissioned to form a government. On 5 November 2014, confirmed Saeima the second straujuma cabinet . The coalition of the three parties Vienotība, Zaļo un Zemnieku savienība (ZZS) and Nacionālā apvienība (NA) led by Laimdota Straujuma had 61 of the 100 seats in parliament.

Resignation and withdrawal from politics

On December 7, 2015, Laimdota Straujuma resigned as head of government due to conflicts between the parties in the coalition. Until the election of her successor Māris Kučinskis on February 11, 2016, she still held the office in an executive position. She remained an ordinary member of the Saeima until the 2018 parliamentary election , in which she did not run for a seat again.
