Nacionālā apvienība "Visu Latvijai!" - "Tēvzemei un Brīvībai / LNNK" ( German  National Association "Everything for Latvia" - "For Fatherland and Freedom / Latvian National Independence Movement" ; short Nacionālā apvienība , NA or VL-TB / LNNK ) is a political party in Latvia , which formed from two predecessor parties on July 23, 2011. Already in 2010 the right-wing extremist party Visu Latvijai! (“Everything for Latvia!”) And the more moderate, nationally conservative Tēvzemei un Brīvībai / LNNK (“For Fatherland and Freedom”) joined an electoral alliance for the Latvian parliamentary elections.

At the European level, the NA is a member of the European Conservatives and Reformists and sends a member of the European Parliament .

history

Visu Latvijai!

Visu Latvijai was founded in 2000 as a nationalist youth movement by the then student Raivis Dzintars and attracted attention mainly through marches and street actions. In 2002 the organization briefly planned to unite with other nationalist youth groups and run on a common list for parliamentary elections. However, this project failed because the chairmen could not find a common line. On December 10, 2002, Visu became Latvijai! newly founded as an association open to all generations. Various traditions date from the following years, which the party still follows today, including the annual parade in front of the Freedom Monument in Riga . On January 14, 2006, the organization was re-established as a political party. In the election for the 9th Saeima in 2006, the party received 1.48% of the vote. Negotiations to join Visu Latvijai! and Tēvzemei un Brīvībai / LNNK to the electoral alliance Vienotība did not come to a conclusion, so that the party only ran together with Tēvzemei un Brivibai for the 2010 parliamentary election. With a vote share of 7.67%, the electoral alliance with its top candidate Roberts Zīlis received eight seats in the 10th Saeima. Six of the eight seats were held by representatives from Visu Latvijai! occupied.

On July 23, 2011, the day of a referendum on the early dissolution of parliament, the unification of the VL party with TB / LNNK was decided at a party congress. Gaidis Bērziņš and Raivis Dzintars were elected as chairmen . In the early parliamentary elections in 2011 , NA ran as a nationalist and economically liberal party and was able to almost double its voting result. She received 13.88% of the vote. Under Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis , the NA became part of a coalition government with the liberal-conservative Vienotība and the Reform Party and provided two ministers.

In the 2014 parliamentary elections for the 12th Saeima, NA was able to improve its election result again and received 16.61% of the votes and 17 seats. Then she, together with the green electoral alliance Zaļo un Zemnieku savienība of Raimonds Vējonis , part of the new coalition government of the liberal-conservative Vienotība of Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma . With Dace Melbārde she provided the Minister of Culture, with Kaspars Gerhards the Minister for Environment and Regional Development and with Dzintars Rasnačs the Minister of Justice. Following the resignation of Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma, there was a reshuffle of the cabinet. Since then, the prime minister has been Māris Kučinskis from the Alliance of Greens and Peasants. The cabinet reshuffle changed nothing in terms of the post allocation for NA.

In the 2018 general election , the party won 13 of the 100 parliamentary seats. Since January 2019 she has been part of the coalition government under Krišjānis Kariņš . The NA has two ministers in his cabinet: Dace Melbārde (culture) and Kaspars Gerhards (agriculture).

Content profile

In its program, the party advocates higher child benefits , higher childcare benefits, free meals in schools and stronger incentives to father at least three children. She wants to counter inequality in the population with significantly higher tax allowances and child bonuses. In terms of economic policy, she calls for financial support for underdeveloped regions. In addition, it would like to achieve energy independence and be less dependent on imports from abroad. From the NA perspective, it should be made more difficult for foreigners to acquire land in Latvia. It also wants to reduce the recruitment of foreign workers. In connection with the Latvian membership in NATO , the election manifesto calls for an increase in defense spending to the contractually binding 2% of gross domestic product. In terms of educational policy, she is committed to maintaining the rural school network and would like to make the teaching of the Latvian language compulsory in schools of the Russian minority. The party rejects the introduction of Russian (mother tongue of 27.6 percent of the population) as the second official language. Instead, she is committed to making it possible to learn Latgalian at all schools in Latgale . It calls for greater support for culture and affordable access to health services, including for those with low incomes. The party recognizes - in contrast to many right-wing and right-wing populist European parties - the fact of man-made climate change .

The party expressed repeatedly critical of the Russian Federation , and demands the return of up to 1940 belonging to Latvia, then by the Soviet Union of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic awarded (RSFSR) area around the city pytalovo (lett. Abrene ).

Criticism and evaluation

While NA describes itself as “nationally conservative”, critics describe it as “right-wing populist to right-wing radical”. On March 16, the party has traditionally attend the annual demonstration commemorating the Latvian Legion of the Waffen-SS in part, marching in the SS veterans and their supporters in Riga. On its website, the party argues that the Latvian SS units did not fight for Adolf Hitler or the German Reich from 1933 to 1945 , but only against the Soviet occupation. Critics pointed out, however, that some of the demonstrators march with swastikas openly on display. In addition, the “March of the Legionaries” is a regular meeting point for right-wing extremists and neo-Nazis from all over Europe. The strict refusal of some national conservative parties and wing of the party to cooperate with the Social Democrats meant that Latvia's strongest voting force has never been part of a government.
