Hin Føroyski Fólkaflokkurin (radikalt sjálvstýri) , or Fólkaflokkurin (FF, German People's Party ), is a conservative , bourgeois party in the Faroe Islands . In elections it bears the list designation A.
history
The Fólkaflokkurin was founded at the end of 1939. The party emerged from the merger of the bourgeois-conservative party Vinnuflokkurin von Thorstein Petersen with renegade members of the Sjálvstýrisflokkurin around Jóannes Patursson . Jóannes Patursson became the first chairman of the new party. Even when it first took part in a parliamentary election, the Løgting election on January 30, 1940 , the party won six seats in parliament with over 24 percent of the vote. Since that election it has been one of the major parties in the Faroe Islands. However, the party's separatist politicians were not represented enough to force participation in the government. After Germany invaded Denmark , the People's Party tried to stage a coup on April 10, 1940, which was peaceful and failed due to the resistance of the ruling parties that had a majority in parliament. In the course of the war, the Faroe Islands were occupied by the British (see Faroe Islands in World War II ), which led to the islands being emancipated from Denmark. During this time the People's Party was able to push through a provisional Faroese government - although still in cooperation with the Danish official - in which the party itself was initially not involved. In the 1943 elections, the party won a relative majority for the first time and was thus entitled to send a representative to the Danish parliament, but this was not done due to the German occupation of Denmark.
The Fólkaflokkurin has been involved in numerous government coalitions in the past and has appointed the Prime Minister himself several times. Especially Hákun Djurhuus stands out, who led the fate of the party as chairman from 1951 to 1980 for almost 30 years. From 1963 to 1967 he was also the first of the three Prime Ministers previously appointed by the FF.
Anfinn Kallsberg , who headed the party from 1993 to 2007, was re-elected as Prime Minister in 2002.
Jørgen Niclasen has been party chairman since 2007 .
From 2008 to 2011 FF had seven MPs in Løgting : Anfinn Kallsberg , Jákup Mikkelsen, Jógvan á Lakjuni , Poul Michelsen , Bjarni Djurholm, Heðin Zachariasen and Óli Breckmann. However, Poul Michelsen resigned from the party in October 2010.
On April 6, 2011, the party withdrew its 2008 appointed ministers Jørgen Niclasen (Foreign Minister), Annika Olsen (Interior) and Jacob Vestergaard (Fisheries and Energy) from the Johannesen government .
After the early election on October 29, 2011, the FF was represented in Løgting with eight MPs from 2011 to 2015. FF returned to the new Johannesen II coalition government on November 14, 2011 . Jørgen Niclasen, Annika Olsen and Jákup Mikkelsen joined the state government as ministers and therefore had no right to vote in parliament. Annika Olsen also became Deputy Prime Minister. The eight MPs with voting rights after the formation of the government were: Jacob Vestergaard, Elsebeth Gunnleygsdóttir, Jógvan á Lakjuni , Bjarni Djurholm, Hanus Samró, Rodmundur Nielsen, Brandur Sandoy and Bogi Andreasen. Jacob Vestergaard moved to the state government in 2012 and became Minister of Fisheries. In September 2013, Janus Rein, who had previously left the Framsókn progressive party as a member of the Løgting , joined the Fólkaflokkurin, whose group in the Løgting now comprised nine members.
In the Løgtingswahl in September 2015, the party suffered losses. For the legislative period from 2015 to 2019, only six FF MPs were elected to the Løgting. Jacob Vestergaard, Annika Olsen, Jørgen Niclasen, Jákup Mikkelsen, Elsebeth Mercedis Gunnleygsdóttir and Jógvan á Lakjuni. A good week after the election, Annika Olsen surprisingly announced that she would leave the party for the party leadership on September 9th. The day before, Rodmundur Nielsen had also announced his departure from the party.
Joen Magnus Rasmussen has been replacing MEP Annika Olsen, who has been on leave since September 20 and is again independent, since September 21, 2015. This means that the Fólkaflokkurin parliamentary group will again have six members for the period of Annika Olsen's leave of absence.
