Løgtingswahl 1940
The 1940 Løgtingswahl in the Faroe Islands took place on January 30, 1940, a few months before the occupation of Denmark by Nazi Germany and the British occupation of the Faroe Islands shortly thereafter in April 1940.
The vote
The big winner was the Fólkaflokkurin , who had been formed shortly before in December 1939 from Thorstein Petersen's party Vinnuflokkurin and renegade of the Sjálvstýrisflokkurin around Jóannes Patursson . The party immediately became the second largest force in parliament.
The big loser in this election was Sjálvstýrisflokkurin, whose share of the vote was halved. The party never really recovered from this bloodletting and from then on belonged to the smaller parties.
The Sambandsflokkurin was able to keep the result of 1936 and remained the largest party with a third of all votes. The Javnaðarflokkurin was also able to keep his result and remained third strongest with a quarter of all votes.
The strictly separatist party Loysingarflokkurin came away empty-handed, as did an independent candidate.
With this first participation in an election, the Fólkaflokkurin was able to establish himself visibly in Løgting, the Faroese parliament, and from now on should be a determining factor in the politics of the 17 islands. The goal of the party was the independence of the Faroe Islands with complete separation from Denmark. Opposite her stood the block of Sambandsflokkurin, Javnaðarflokkurin and Sjálvstýrisflokkurin, which continued to rely on a more or less close relationship with Denmark.

consequences
The election result had great significance for the occupation years during the war. Even if the Faroe Islands formally continued to hold a Danish office after the occupation of Denmark in April 1940, with the bailiff Hilbert at the helm, the three unionist parties Sambandsflokkurin, Javnaðarflokkurin and Sjálvstýrisflokkurin became due to the changed situation with regard to the British occupation in May a provisional system of government and administration for the Faroe Islands, designed by Edward Mitens of Sjálvstýrisflokkurin, adopted and signed by the Danish bailiff Hilbert and which was to remain in force until the end of March 1948. Only the Fólkaflokkurin raised objections to the temporarily applicable system of government and the relationship between Thorstein Petersen from the Fólkaflokkurin and bailiff Hilbert then cooled noticeably over the war years.
