Løgtingswahl 1958

The 1958 Løgtingswahl in the Faroe Islands took place on November 8, 1958. It was the third election since the internal self-government ( heimastýri ) was obtained in 1948.

The biggest winner was the Javnaðarflokkurin . He gained 6% and received three more seats. The Tjóðveldisflokkurin gained only minimally, but was still able to book an additional seat. The Framburðsflokkurin moved into parliament for the first time and received a seat.

The biggest loser was the Fólkaflokkurin with over 3% . He had to give up a seat. The Sambandsflokkurin also lost over 2%, but was able to hold his previous seats.

The governing coalition of Sambandsflokkurin, Fólkaflokkurin and Sjálvstýrisflokkurin, led by Prime Minister Kristian Djurhuus, lost its majority in parliament with this election. With the enormous increase of three seats, the Javnaðarflokkurin had become the strongest party in Løgting.

Peter Mohr Dam then formed a social democratic coalition of Javnaðarflokkurin, Sambandsflokkurin and Sjálvstýrisflokkurin. The previous state government Kristian Djurhuus II was replaced by the first state government of Peter Mohr Dam . It was also the first government in the Faroe Islands to be headed by a Social Democratic Prime Minister.

With this election, the total number of MPs in Løgting was increased from 27 to 30. Six parties took part in the election, all of which entered parliament.
