The 1998 Løgtingswahl in the Faroe Islands took place on April 1st of that year. It was the 14th election since the establishment of internal self-government ( heimastýri ) in 1948.
The left-wing Republican Tjóðveldisflokkurin emerged as the big winner and largest party from this election. He was able to double his seats from 4 to 8. The social democratic Javnaðarflokkurin and the conservative Fólkaflokkurin were each able to gain 2 seats.
The losers in this election were the unionist Sambandsflokkurin (−2) and the smaller parties such as Sjálvstýrisflokkurin (−1), Miðflokkurin (−1), Kristiligi Fólkaflokkurin (−2) and Verkamannafylkingin (−3).
For the Kristiligi Fólkaflokkurin and the Verkamannafylkingin this was the last choice. Both parties broke up by the next election in 2002.
As a result of the unique election results which led Unionist was state government Edmund Joensen II by the newly-formed state government anfinn kallsberg I replaced.
