The Verkamannafylkingin (translated as Workers' Front or Workers Union ) was a social democratic party in the Faroe Islands . The party was founded during the economic crisis in the early 1990s by dissatisfied voters from Javnaðarflokkurin and carried the party letter I. It disbanded in 2001.

history

It was mainly through the initiative of the union leader Ingeborg Vinther that a protest party of dissatisfied and disappointed Javnaðarflokkurin voters was formed during the severe financial and economic crisis that hit the Faroe Islands in the first half of the 1990s . The party entered the Løgtingswahl in 1994 as Verkamannafylkingin and won three seats with 9.5 percent of the votes (2,421 votes). Ingeborg Vinther , Óli Jacobsen and Kristian Magnussen were MPs . This seat gain was largely at the expense of the social democratic Javnaðarflokkurin, whose number of MPs halved after this election from ten to five.

The workers' front party Verkamannafylkingin joined the coalition of four of the state government Edmund Joensen I (1994-1996) and was given the fields of industry, trade, labor, agriculture and insurance / police / justice with Oli Jacobsen as minister. The party was also represented in the coalition of four of Edmund Joensen's second state government (1996-1998). Axel H. Nolsøe became Minister for Social Affairs, Health, Labor and Insurance / Police / Justice.

However, the party did not return to parliament after the 1998 Løgtings election and disbanded in 2001. Some of the members rejoined the Javnaðarflokkurin.
