Løgtingswahl 1945

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1945 Løgtingswahl in the Faroe Islands took place on November 6, 1945. It was the first election after the end of the war and the penultimate election before the internal self-government ( heimastýri ) was achieved in March 1948.

prehistory

After the end of the Second World War in May 1945 and the resumption of the connection between Denmark and the Faroe Islands, it was clear to both sides that one could not simply return to the pre-war conditions of a Danish office . A new constitutional structure had to be created for the Faroe Islands, which took into account the five years of self-government. All parties involved agreed on this. There were very different ideas about what this new structure should look like. The Fólkaflokkurin , who had formed anew before the war in 1939 and advocated the separation from Denmark, experienced a meteoric rise in the elections of 1940 and 1943 during the British occupation and, as the largest party in Parliament, now called for new elections. The last election was not until 1943, but the situation after the end of the war was completely different, especially since the Faroese, who were stranded in Denmark during the war, did not take part in the last election. New elections were therefore scheduled for November 6, 1945.

The vote

The election took place on November 6, 1945, but in the end the election result did not bring about any major changes. The Fólkaflokkurin lost one seat and the Sambandsflokkurin even two; but since the Javnaðarflokkurin had gained one seat, Sambandsflokkurin and Javnaðarflokkurin together were still with a seat in the majority. The distribution of power in parliament with regard to relations with Denmark was more or less the same as before the election. The breakaway party was almost as strong as the Denmark-oriented parliamentary bloc. The Sjálvstýrisflokkurin was again unable to meet the conditions required by the change in the electoral law and was therefore again unable to get a seat in parliament.

In early 1946, a committee of the newly elected Løgting went to Copenhagen to negotiate with the Danish government about the future status of the Faroe Islands.
