Edward Mitens

Edward Esbern Mitens (born Edward Esbern Mortensen on November 30, 1889 in Tvøroyri ; died on June 3, 1973 in Tórshavn ) was a Faroese writer, civil servant, lawyer and politician of the Sjálvstýrisflokkurin .

education and profession

He grew up in his place of birth on the south island of Suðuroy , attended secondary school in Tórshavn from 1901 to 1905 and then went to Denmark, where he graduated from Sorø Akademi in 1907 and then studied law. He finished his studies as a cand. Jur. in 1912.

After finishing his studies, he went back to the Faroe Islands and worked there from 1913 to 1939; first for a short period as Sýslumaður on Suðuroy and on Eysturoy , then settled down as a lawyer in Tórshavn. He then took over the management of the Parliamentary Secretariat ( løgtingsskrivstova ) in 1939 , which he held until 1949. In this function he wrote a memorandum in April 1940, which formed the basis for a temporary government and administrative system in the Faroe Islands, the so-called " Bráðfeingisstýrisskipanin ", which came into force as a law on May 9, 1940 and until autonomy in the year 1948 was valid. This provisional system had become necessary because the Faroe Islands had been completely cut off from the government in Copenhagen by the German occupation of Denmark during the Second World War .

Edward Mitens was a member of the board of directors of Føroya Banki since 1945 and was chairman from 1950 to 1973. He was also the Finnish Vice Consul in the Faroe Islands from 1932 and Finnish Consul from 1954. Furthermore, he has published numerous books as a non-fiction author in the course of his life.

Edward Mitens began his political career as a member of the Danish Folketing , to which he belonged from 1915 to 1918 (as Edward Mortensen). From 1925 to 1928 he was also a member of the municipal council in Tórshavn. However, he devoted his main political activity to the Løgting , in which he sat from 1916 to 1940 as a member of the Suðuroy electoral district for Sjálvstýrisflokkurin. He was also President of Parliament from 1928 to 1930 and from 1936 to 1939.

In 1936 Edward Mitens was also chairman of the Sjálvstýrisflokkurin after a ballot against the previous incumbent Jóannes Patursson . Patursson was not at all happy with the course of his party with regard to the upcoming land reform in the Faroe Islands and later left it to found the Fólkaflokkurin with other dissatisfied people at the end of 1939 . During his time as chairman of the largest party in parliament, Faroese was introduced as a language in school classes and in the church in 1938. A year later, after 25 years in Faroese politics, Mitens retired from Løgtings. On November 29, 1939, one day before his 50th birthday, he took part in a session of parliament for the last time as a member. After that he was entrusted with the management of the Parliamentary Secretariat until 1949.

After the end of the war and the beginning of autonomy, he played a political role again for four years and sat from 1954 to 1959 as Minister without portfolio for the Sjálvstýrisflokkurin in the state government of Kristian Djurhuus II . There he was responsible for health and cultural issues, among other things, and was therefore involved in both the Klaksvík dispute and the establishment of Útvarp Føroya ; both events that took place during this period.

family

Edward Mitens came as the son of the businessman, shipowner and politician Niels Juel Mortensen (1860–1929) and his wife Josefina nee. Effersøe, both from Tvøroyri, born there. In 1916 Edward Mortensen married Annie Wissing from Copenhagen.

Edward had the paternal surname Mortensen until 1923 and only then called himself Mitens.

His mother was the daughter of Gudmund Effersøe (1827-1916), the long-time Sýslumaður of the South Island. The editor and poet Rasmus C. Effersøe and the politician Oliver Effersøe were his mother's brothers. Edward collected the works of his mother's brother and campaigned for a bust of RC Effersøe to be placed in front of the Løgtingshaus in Tórshavn. He also gave the speech on the occasion of the unveiling of the Ólavsøka monument in 1933.
