Jacob Vestergaard (born April 7, 1961 in Tvøroyri , Faroe Islands ) is a Faroese police officer and politician of the conservative People's Party ( Fólkaflokkurin ). He was Minister of Fisheries in the Faroese state government from 2003 to 2004, from 2008 to 2011 and from 2012 to 2015 . Since mid-September 2015 he has been back in Løgting as a member of his party .

politics

Jacob Vestergaard was Mayor of Sumba (Sumbiar kommuna) from January 1993 to February 2003 and from January to December 2004 .

In 2003 he became Minister of Fisheries for one year in the Faroese state government Kallsberg II.

From December 2005 to November 2007 Interior Minister Jacob Vestergaard was in the state government Eidesgaard I . He was fired for relocating the headquarters of the coastal shipping company Strandfaraskip Landsins (SSL) from the capital Tórshavn to Tvøroyri, his birthplace, on the South Island .

In January 2008 he was elected to the Løgting for the first time with 870 personal votes. This was the best result within his party and observers assume that the relocation of SSL's headquarters with 16 jobs to the South Island contributed significantly to the good performance.

From September 2008 to April 2011 he was Minister for Foreign Affairs and Fisheries in the Cabinet of Kaj Leo Johannesen I . He then gave up the post of Foreign Minister and, in June 2011, that of Minister for Fisheries.

At the end of October 2011 he was re-elected to parliament with 1,048 personal votes. This was the second best result within his party, just behind Annika Olsen .

In February 2012 he succeeded Jákup Mikkelsen as Minister of Fisheries in the state government Kaj Leo Johannesen II and remained in office until September 2015.

In the elections for Løgting on September 1, 2015, he was re-elected with 966 personal votes. This was the best result within his party with a few votes ahead of Annika Olsen. However, after the successful formation of a coalition by Aksel V. Johannesen, his party ended up in the opposition. After his departure as Minister of Fisheries, Jacob Vestergaard has been back in Løgting as a member of his party since mid-September 2015.
