Aksel Vilhelmsson Johannesen (born November 8, 1972 in Klaksvík , Faroe Islands ) is a Faroese lawyer and politician . He was Minister of Health, Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands. Since 2011 he has been chairman of the Faroese Social Democrats . On September 15, 2015, Aksel V. Johannesen was elected as the new Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands (Løgmaður) and is the successor of Kaj Leo Johannesen .

Education and political career

Aksel V. Johannesen studied law at the University of Copenhagen and graduated in 2004. From 2007 to 2009 he worked as a lawyer in the Faroese capital Tórshavn . From 2009 to 2011 he was Minister of Health in the government of Prime Minister Kaj Leo Holm Johannesen and from February to November 2011 Minister of Finance of the Faroe Islands. On March 5, 2011, he was elected by the Faroese Social Democrats to succeed Jóannes Eidesgaard as party chairman and on April 6, 2011, he also became Deputy Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands. In the parliamentary elections on October 29, 2011, he was elected as a member of the Løgting . After the change of government in November 2011, he took over the leadership of his party's parliamentary group in Løgting and made a name for himself over the next few years as one of the leading opposition politicians in the Faroe Islands. From April to May 2012 Aksel V. Johannesen was also a member of the Danish Folketing representing Sjúrður Skaale .

In the elections for Løgting on September 1, 2015, the Faroese Social Democrats emerged as the big winners with 8,074 votes and became the strongest party with 25.1% of all votes. Aksel V. Johannesen was also able to book the greatest single success with 2,405 personal votes and at the same time set a new Faroese record. Never before had a politician managed to attract so many personal votes from voters.

Just two days after the election, the majority of the parties represented in the new parliament agreed to entrust Aksel V. Johannesen with the negotiations for the formation of a new state government . If he succeeds in concluding the coalition negotiations, he will lead the next Faroe Islands government as Prime Minister .

Eleven days after the election, Aksel V. Johannesen announced that the three parties Javnaðarflokkurin, Tjóðveldi and Framsókn had agreed on a coalition agreement and that only an agreement had to be reached on the distribution of the ministerial posts.

On September 15, 2015, Aksel V. Johannesen was elected as the new Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands (Løgmaður) and thus the successor to Kaj Leo Johannesen with 22 votes in favor and 11 abstentions with no dissenting votes at the opening meeting of the Løgting . Then, in his first speech to the Løgting, he announced the names of the eight ministers who, together with him, form the new state government of the Faroe Islands.

Helena Dam á Neystabø is the successor to his seat in Løgting .

Family and personal life

Aksel V. Johannesen was born in Klaksvík as the son of the Faroese politician and minister Vilhelm Johannesen and his wife Johild. He is married to Katrin D. Apol; the couple has three children. As a former football player of the KÍ Klaksvík , Aksel V. Johannesen was also temporarily chairman of the club.
