Life

Sonja Jógvansdóttir is the daughter of Jógvan Finnur Poulsen and Jónvør Hansdóttir and comes from Fuglafjørður .

education and profession

In 1997 she graduated from the school center in Kambsdalur . She then studied political science at Edinburgh University until 2002 . From 2002 to 2004 she worked for the former Faroese daily Dimmalætting . From 2005 to 2006 she worked for the Faroese EU representation. politics

In the elections for Løgting on September 1, 2015, she was elected as a social democratic member of the Faroese parliament and with 1,020 personal votes, right after Aksel V. Johannesen, she received the second-best result among the social democrats and the third-best personal result among all parties. Sonja Jógvansdóttir is the first Faroese member of parliament to publicly acknowledge her homosexuality . She is also the co-founder of LGBT Føroyar. One of her declared political goals is to change the existing marriage law in the Faroe Islands, which is why she is opposed to a coalition with the strictly religious Miðflokkurin .

Leaving the Javnaðarflokkurin

Late in the evening of September 15, 2015, the first working day of the new coalition government, Sonja Jógvansdóttir announced that she had left the social democratic Javnaðarflokkurin and was therefore no longer part of the parliamentary group. But she wants to continue to support the coalition government as an independent MP. As a reason for her resignation, she stated her dissatisfaction with the fact that the change in the law on civil marriage of same-sex people was not expressly mentioned in the coalition agreement and that a vocal minority within the social democratic faction had succeeded in pushing this change in the law off the agenda. Since she had worked towards this change in the law all her political life, she could no longer be a member of this party.

Aksel V. Johannesen, Prime Minister and Chairman of the Social Democrats, regretted Sonja Jógvansdóttir's departure, but pointed out that nothing would change in the coalition strength of 17 MPs, as Sonja had promised to continue to support the coalition as an independent MP.

Sonja Jógvansdóttir is the second MP to leave her party after the election on September 1, 2015. Annika Olsen had previously left the Fólkaflokkurin on September 9 and has since been an independent member of the Løgting.
