Edgars Rinkēvičs (born September 21, 1973 in Jūrmala , then Latvian SSR ) is a Latvian politician of the liberal-conservative Vienotība party and acting Foreign Minister of Latvia.

Edgars Rinkēvičs studied political science at the University of Latvia and at the University of Groningen , which he graduated with a master's in 1997 .

Political career

In October 2011, Rinkēvičs was appointed Foreign Minister of Latvia and subsequently joined the Reformu partija (Reform Party), one of the three coalition partners. In the parliamentary elections in Latvia in 2014 , he entered the list of Vienotība and was able to win a mandate for them. In the following years Rinkēvičs took over the office of foreign minister again. In the 2018 parliamentary elections , he was one of the few members of the Vienotība to defend his mandate. In the center-right government of his party colleague Krišjānis Kariņš , Rinkēvičs was confirmed as foreign minister.

Private

On November 6, 2014 one day after his re-sworn in as a minister under the second straujuma cabinet , outed himself Rinkēvičs the first politician to Latvia via Twitter as homosexual. He called for the introduction of a civil partnership institute for same-sex couples in Latvia. Rinkēvičs' tweet was widely discussed in the national and international press.
