Bogdan Lucian Aurescu (born September 9, 1973 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian diplomat and non-party politician. From November 2014 to November 2015 he was Romania's Foreign Minister . Since November 2019 he has held this office again in the Ludovic Orban I and Ludovic Orban II cabinets .

Life

He studied law and history at the University of Bucharest , followed by studies at the National Defense University "Charles I" . He received his doctorate in 2003 with a thesis on "The concept of sovereignty and the primacy of international law ". He had been a member of the Foreign Ministry since 1996, and he also worked as a lecturer at the university. From 2004 to 2009 he represented Romania before the International Court of Justice in a dispute with Ukraine over Snake Island . Since 2009 he has been State Secretary in the Foreign Ministry.

Since November 24, 2014, he has been Romania's Foreign Minister in the government of Victor Ponta (PSD). His predecessor Teodor Meleşcanu resigned after a few days in office. On March 9, 2015, Aurescu received the German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier for a discussion about the Ukraine crisis . With the change of government on November 17, 2015 he left the ministerial office, his successor was Lazăr Comănescu .

On November 4, 2019, he was reappointed Foreign Minister and has since been a member of Ludovic Orban's cabinet (PNL).
