Lazar Comănescu

Lazăr Comănescu (born June 4, 1949 in Horezu , Vâlcea County ) is a Romanian diplomat and politician. He was the country's foreign minister in 2008 and from 2015 to 2017 .

From 1967 to 1972 Comănescu studied foreign trade at the University of Economics in Bucharest and then entered the diplomatic service. In 1982 he switched to teaching at the Bucharest University of Economics, where he received his doctorate in 1983 with a focus on international economic relations.

In 1990 Comănescu returned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , where he initially held the post of advisor. In 1994 he became Director of the European Department and in 1995 State Secretary . From 1998 to 2001 he was Romanian ambassador to NATO and then until 2008 ambassador to the European Union .

From April 15, 2008 to December 22, 2008 Comănescu was Foreign Minister, Cabinet Tăriceanu II . From May 2009 to 2015 he was Romania's ambassador to Germany . From November 2015 to January 2017 he was foreign minister again in the Cioloș cabinet .

Comănescu is married and has one daughter. He speaks French, English, Spanish and German.
