Michael Schmelich (born September 19, 1954 in Osterode am Harz ) is a German politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ), journalist, publisher and culture impresario .

Life and education

Growing up in Dassel and Sievershausen , Schmelich attended the Paul-Gerhardt-Gymnasium and was trained as an industrial clerk at the Rainhald-von-Dassel School after completing secondary school . He then took a course in business administration at the Administration and Business Academy in Göttingen. He then completed a degree in social economy at the scientific academy of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Dortmund Social Academy . He completed internships at newspapers and radio. He then trained as an organization secretary at the German Trade Union Federation (DGB).

Schmelich has lived in Dresden since 2003 . He is divorced and has 3 children.

politics

In 1970 he joined the Junge Union and the Christian Democratic Workforce (CDA). From 1975 he was the Lower Saxony state chairman of the CDA youth organization Young Workers . In 1980 he took part in a campaign against Franz Josef Strauss's candidacy for chancellor , and in the subsequent party regulation process he was suspended from all party offices. In 1981 he left the CDU and joined the Greens . In 1982 he ran for the Lower Saxony state parliament . Of 5 June 1985 to 20 June 1986, he moved during the rotation principle as a deputy in the parliament of Lower Saxony (10th Term) as a member of the Green Party one. From 1986 to 1990 he was a member of the Broadcasting Council of the NDR . After more than 15 years of political abstinence, he returned to the political stage in 2008, now living in Dresden . He acted as the campaign manager of the Green mayor candidate Eva Jähnigen and was chairman of the Dresden district association of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen from 2010 to 2016 . In 2009 he ran as a direct candidate in constituency 46 and in 14th place on the state list for the Saxon state parliament . In 2014 he was a direct candidate in constituency 43. In the local elections on May 25, 2014 Schmelich prevailed after a vote against internal party resistance and was finally elected to the city council of the state capital Dresden. On May 26, 2019, he moved back to the city council.

After completing various training courses, Schmelich took over the management of the Duderstadt branch of the DGB in 1978 and became youth secretary for southern Lower Saxony. After Schmelich left the CDU , a nationally noticed conflict developed about his future as an employee of the DGB. The Christian-social DGB wing insisted on his replacement as trade union secretary in Duderstadt. In the end, Schmelich was not offered a new position at the DGB after his mandate ended, so that his activity officially ended in 1990.

Schmelich was editor and publisher of the Göttingen city ​​magazine Hiero Itzo from 1983 to 1993, from 1986 here and now and since 1991 editor-in-chief and publisher of the Kassel city magazine Blizz . In 1990 he was involved in founding the first independent city magazine in the GDR , LEO Leipzig . He worked as a culture editor for the youth magazine ran , was a freelancer for Musikexpress and NDR . In 2004 he founded the literary publisher edition copista . From 2009 to 2013 he worked as press spokesman for the parliamentary group of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen .

From 1986 Schmelich also worked as a cultural manager, organizer and producer of concerts and tours. From 1994 to 1996 he was the tour organizer of the rock band Böhse Onkelz and then author, producer and organizer of the children's musical The Smurfs come to town . From 2002 to 2004 he was the manager of Gunter Gabriel , with whom he founded the Erzengelmusik label . From 2005 to 2006 he was a consultant to the actor Rolf Zacher , since 2006 he has been a PR consultant for the touring production Chinese National Circus founded by André Heller .
