The world record holder Chi Cheng from Taiwan was injured in the spring and could not start in Munich . The favorite was the European champion from 1971 , Renate Stecher from the GDR, who had already become Olympic champion in the 100-meter run here . The Polish Olympic champion from 1968 , Irena Szewińska, and the Australian Raelene Boyle, winner of the British Commonwealth Games in 1970 and previously runner-up over 100 meters in Munich , were also highly rated .
In the final, Renate Stecher took the lead right after the start and was able to defend it until the end. Raelene Boyle made the race very tight and was close to the GDR sprinter on the home straight , but could not overtake her. The physically strong Irena Szewińska passed several competitors in the last 50 meters and won the bronze medal with a hundredth of a second ahead of Ellen Streidt, GDR, and Annegret Kroniger, BR Germany.
With her winning time, Renate Stecher Chi Chengs set an official world record rounded to tenths of a second and at the same time a new Olympic record . With the values measured purely electronically and rounded to hundredths of a second, the winning time means not only setting the existing world record, but also setting a new world record.
Irena Szewińska won her third medal in this discipline and became the most successful athlete over 200 meters .
