Ainārs Šlesers (born January 22, 1970 as Ainārs Leščinskis in Riga ) is a Latvian businessman and politician. He has held ministerial posts several times.

Life

Ainārs Šlesers grew up in the Stadtteilengarags district of Riga and has a secondary school leaving certificate. From 1992 to 1994 he lived in Norway and made contacts with the local oil industry. With this he started a successful career as an entrepreneur after his return to Latvia. He brokered the entry of several Scandinavian retail chains into the Latvian market. As early as 1997 he was included in the list of Latvian millionaires.

From 1999 to 2002 Šlesers studied at the Latvian Christian Academy, but did not graduate.

In 1998, Šlesers was elected to the 7th Saeima , the parliament of the Latvian Republic, for the Jaunā partija . From November 1998 to April 1999 he was Minister of Economy in the Cabinet of Vilis Krištopans .

In 2002, Šlesers co-founded the Latvijas Pirmā Partija (LPP, First Party of Latvia), which won 10 of the 100 parliamentary seats in the election for the 8th Saeima in October 2002 and entered into a government coalition under Einars Repše from the New Era with other parties . Šlesers was Deputy Prime Minister from November 2002 to January 2004 and from March 2004 to December 2004, and from March 2004 to March 2006 Minister of Transport. Between November 2006 and March 2009 he again served as his country's transport minister. The award of construction contracts worth several hundred million lats , including for the expansion of Riga Airport and Via Baltica , was in his hands.

In May 2011, Latvian President Valdis Zatlers applied to the Constitutional Court to dissolve parliament after it refused to lift the immunity of Šlesers, who is to be investigated for corruption. The Latvian anti-corruption authority had previously initiated an investigation into Šlesers, who is considered one of the richest men in the country, for shady machinations.

Due to the poor election results in the 2011 parliamentary elections , Šlesers dissolved his party on December 1 of the same year. In 2013 he returned to politics with the small party Vienoti Latvijai (United for Latvia).
