Jānis Urbanovičs (born March 23, 1959 in Rēzekne , Latvian SSR ) is a Latvian politician. He has been a member of the Saeima since 1994 and ran for the office of Latvian Prime Minister in 2010.

biography

After attending school in Rēzekne, Urbanovics completed a degree in hydraulic engineering at the Latvian Agricultural Academy in Jelgava by 1982 .

He is the president of the "Draudzība un sadarbība" foundation and founder of the "Forum Bałtyckie". Urbanovičs is married and has two daughters and a son.

politics

From 1984 to 1991 Jānis Urbanovičs was secretary of the Central Committee of the Komsomol of the Latvian SSR. In 1993 he ran for the electoral alliance Saskaņa Latvijai - Atdzimšana Tautsaimniecībai, initially unsuccessful in the elections for the 5th Saeima, but was able to move up to Parliament for Ernst Jurkans in 1994. In 1994 he joined the new party Tautas Saskaņas partija of the former Foreign Minister Jānis Jurkāns . In 1995 and 1998 Urbanovics was re-elected for the Tautas Saskaņas partija ', and in 2002 for the party alliance Par Cilvēka Tiesībām Vienotā Latvijā . In 2005 he founded the group Saskaņas Centrs with others and was re-elected to the Saeima in 2006. In 2010 the Tautas Saskaņas partija, whose chairmanship he had held since 2005, the Sociāldemokrātiskā partija-SDP and Jaunais Centrs merged to form a new party " Sociāldemokrātiskā partija" Saskaņa " ". Urbanovics became chairman and candidate for prime ministerial office in the 2010 elections. Contrary to the previous polls, however, Saskaņa failed and remained in the opposition.
