Parliamentary election in Latvia 1993

The 1993 parliamentary elections in Latvia took place on June 5 and 6, 1993. It was the election of the 5th Saeima of the Republic of Latvia and the first election after Latvia regained independence .

Electoral system

100 seats in the Latvian Parliament were determined on the basis of the law on the election of the 5th Saeima of October 20, 1992. In contrast to the pre-war elections , a four percent threshold was introduced and the voting age was reduced from 21 to 18 years. The election was based on proportional representation . The approximately 700,000 Russians living in the country were not eligible to vote.

Election result

Of 23 lists, 8 moved into the Saeima. The others failed at the four percent hurdle.

Among the 100 members of the Saeima were:

• 15 women
• 88 Latvians
• 91 with a university degree

The 5th Saeima ratified the agreement on the complete withdrawal of Russian forces from Latvian territory.
