The European elections in Portugal in 1987 took place on July 19, 1987. It was the first European elections in Portugal and took place as a by-election of the 1984 European elections , as Portugal had only joined the European Community in 1986 . The election took place according to proportional representation without a threshold clause, with the whole of Portugal being considered a single constituency . In the election, 24 of the 518 seats in the European Parliament were awarded in Portugal .

The election took place at the same time as the national parliamentary election, but the results sometimes differed significantly. While the Social Democrats won an absolute majority nationally, this was not the case in the European elections. In addition to the Social Democrats, MPs from the Socialists ( Partido Socialista ), right-wing conservatives ( Centro Democrático e Social ) and the Communists ( Coligação Democrática Unitária ) moved in. The party of former President António Ramalho Eanes , the Partido Renovador Democrático , also won a seat. The election is still the European elections in Portugal with the highest turnout (72.42 percent).
